TWO firefighters were rushed to hospital after youths lobbed a firework through a station window on Halloween.

The pair were working at their desks at Redbridge Fire Station when the banger was chucked through a window at around 6.45pm.

It landed on the table in front of them and exploded, causing them to suffer ringing in their ears.

The two firefighters were taken to A&E but were not seriously injured.

A Hampshire and Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service boss has condemned the "nasty attack" and a police appeal has been launched.

Assistant Director of Operations, Dan Tasker, said: “We are appalled at this nasty and senseless attack on our fire station.

“The consequences of this deeply unpleasant incident could have been much worse and we’re thankful that our firefighters were not seriously injured.

“They are both being supported and we urge anyone with any information to contact the police.

“Our job is to protect our communities and we know most people understand and respect that. But attacks on our people will never be tolerated and will always be reported to the police.

“In the lead-up to Bonfire Night, I’d like to make a direct appeal to the public to act responsibly. Fireworks are explosives and can cause real and lasting damage.

“Please talk to your children about where they are and what they are doing.

“If you see or experience anyone behaving recklessly with fireworks, please report it to the police immediately.”

Last night, the Daily Echo was on patrol with police officers in the west of the city in the wake of Halloween trouble in 2021.

Officers attended a number of small incidents including the antisocial use of fireworks at Mansel Park and youths throwing eggs and fireworks into traffic on Shirley High Street.

This year Hampshire Constabulary deployed more than twice as many officers on patrol to keep the streets safe.

Anyone with information on the fire station incident should call 101 quoting reference number 44220443014.
