A NOTORIOUS crash hotspot has seen more than 20 lorries plough into a railway bridge in the last 18 years.
Greatbridge Road in Romsey is notorious for lorry crashes.
In just 18 years the Echo has reported on at least 23 HGV collisions near its junction with Duttons Road.
On Thursday a lorry crashed into the bridge blocking the road in both directions from 3.20pm until 7pm.
There were tailbacks along Winchester Road and Alma Road with motorists forced to find alternative routes.
However, it certainly wasn’t the first time this has happened.
Here we take a look back at some of the biggest crashes:
October 28, 2021

There was traffic chaos after a lorry struck the Romsey bridge just before 11am.
The road was closed in both directions between Fishlake Meadows and Duttons Road.
Those living in the area described the noise as an “awful screeching and banging” when the vehicle hit the bridge.
August 31, 2021

Winchester Road was shut after a lorry hauling a shipping container smashed into the railway bridge.
Emergency services rushed to the scene at around 11.45am.
The crash forced train services to be delayed during the afternoon.
The road was reopened and trains returned to normal services around 3pm.
December 11, 2019

Police were called at 1.34pm to reports of lorry hitting a barrier – a month after another similar crash happened on the same bridge.
Motorists were asked to avoid the area following the incident which blocked both directions on Greatbridge Road.

No injuries were reported after a lorry hit a barrier at the bridge on Greatbridge Road. The crash happened around 1.34pm
It goes without saying the crash blocked the road in both directions near Budds Lane.
