SOUTHAMPTON is set to mark Remembrance Day with a military parade through the city.

Hundreds of people are expected to gather in the city centre next weekend to honour the fallen and serving armed forces personnel.

Military contingents and the City of Southampton (Albion) Band will leave Guildhall Square at 10.35am and head towards the Cenotaph in Watts Park, where the annual Remembrance Service will begin shortly before 11am.

Almost three thousand poppies have been knitted and donated by communities across Southampton this year to create a display at the Cenotaph.

The poppies will be stored after the service and displayed at The Cenotaph for Remembrance year after year.

Archie Parsons from Southampton Royal British Legion said: “On Remembrance Sunday and Armistice Day, we reflect and give thanks to all those that played their part in bringing peace and those who helped to re-build our great city to what it is today."

The parade route will start at the Guildhall forecourt and will head north along West Marlands Road before turning east into Commercial Road.

The parade will turn north along Above Bar Street to Watts Park and through the Cenotaph for wreath laying.

After the service, the parade will head south along Above Bar Street to Guildhall Square.

Deputy lieutenant the Honourable Hugo Cubitt, superintendent chief inspector Marcus Kennedy, and the lord mayor of Southampton Councillor Jacqui Rayment will be in attendance.

A number of roads will be closed in the city centre between 7am and 2pm.

The roads include:

  • Above Bar Street - From New Road to Cumberland Place
  • Commercial Road - From Havelock Road to Above Bar Street
  • West Marlands Road - It's entire length
  • Gibbs Road - It's entire length
