A SCHEME to support mums breastfeeding in public has been launched in Southampton.
The Breastfeeding Welcome scheme aims to provide breastfeeding families with a comfortable and safe environment in which to feed their babies.
Launched in partnership with Southampton City Council and Solent Health, the scheme hopes to make families feel comfortable breastfeeding in public.
The project asked businesses to show a commitment to welcoming breastfeeding families.
Businesses across the city that support the charity will have a sticker displayed in their window so families know they are welcome.
The commitment means businesses will show that staff are aware of a commitment to welcome breastfeeding on their premises.
They provide guidance to their staff on how to effectively respond to a potential complaint from another visitor about breastfeeding.
Eleanor Johnson, service manager for the Breastfeeding Network Southampton, said: "The Southampton Welcomes Breastfeeding Scheme aims to raise awareness of the need for people to feel safe and supported to breastfeed while out and about across the city.
"Babies need to breastfeed regularly and responsively for their nutrition, health and for comfort.
"The Equality Act 2010 states that it is discrimination to treat people unfavourably because they're breastfeeding, but we know despite this, that sometimes, new mothers need a little extra support when first feeding out in public.
"Knowing that a venue is actively welcoming of them doing so can really help at various stages on a mother's breastfeeding journey.
"We are so grateful that so many amazing venues have signed up to the scheme and we look forward to welcoming many more."
