A MAN has been released under investigation after a BMW crashed into a block of flats in Portswood.
The 46-year-old was arrested on suspicion of drink driving and criminal damage after a white BMW 316 reversed into The Newlands in Portswood Road in the early hours of Thursday.
The crash caused bricks to collapse and left a gaping hole in a groundfloor flat.
Residents had to be evacuated in the middle of the night, fire crews say, while neighbours reported being woken up by a commotion.
By the time firefighters left the scene at 4am, the building remained structurally unsafe - though work to stabilise it continued into the day.
Portswood Road was closed in both directions between Brickfield Road and Kitchener Road for several hours.
