PLANS for a new telecoms pole in Southampton have been approved.

Proposals for a new 5G mast in Woolston have been given the green light by the city council’s planning committee.

Under the plans submitted by Clarke Telecom, the 18m metal pole will be installed on Victoria Road by the junction with John Thornycroft Road and will serve as part of Hutchinson 3G's network across the city.

Residents in the area had raised concerns about the plans, with one saying: “Please do not allow this in our district centre in a high footfall area near to shops and homes.

“This will look very ugly and ruin the character of the area. Is this really needed and if so then surely there is a less visually impactful location?”

Another one said: “The proposed siting of the equipment will have a detrimental impact on users of the footway by reducing the usable width at a location with high pedestrian footfall.”
