PLANS to open Aldi store on the edge of Totton have been given the go-ahead.

New Forest District Council has approved proposals to build a discount supermarket beside the home of AFC Totton at Salisbury Road, Calmore.

As reported in the Daily Echo, the scheme is expected to create up to 50 jobs.

Cllr Joe Reilly told fellow members of the district planning committee that the store would be a "great addition" to Totton.

Cllr Sue Bennison added: "This is an ideal space given the amount of housing coming forward in the local plan. I think the store will do really well."

The scheme includes 144 parking spaces, plus an extra six for disabled drivers and eight parent and child spaces.

It was supported by Totton and Eling Town Council, which said it would provide shoppers with extra choice as well as creating jobs.

The application also sparked three letters of support from people living in the area.

A report to councillors said: "The scheme would have economic, environmental and social benefits, preserving the character and appearance of the area.

"The amenity of local residents, including those residing at the adjoining caravan site can be preserved.

"Improved pedestrian accessibility would be secured and highway safety maintained."
