A SOUTHAMPTON university has won a national award for helping youngsters pursue a career in basketball.
Solent University has been named 'Educational Institution of the Year Award’ at the Basketball England National Awards 2022.
The award recognises the role Solent played in helping develop so many young people to pursue a career in the sport of basketball, whether that be playing, coaching, or the opportunity to develop media skills.
The university was also praised for developing strong community links, making sure that youngsters can also benefit from their support.
On the award, Stewart Kellett, Basketball England's CEO, said: "Congratulations to our amazing 2022 award winners.
"Basketball is fighting back after a tough period during Covid and without the network of clubs, volunteers, staff, officials, coaches, and others who keep our game so vibrant and valuable for our communities, there would be no basketball.
"You are the lifeblood of the game, and we thank you for everything you do."
Meanwhile, Matt Bishop, head of sports programmes at Solent University, says: "What a great way to finish 2022.
"I know firsthand the positive impact the programme has on the students at Solent, as well as the wider community, ‘on and off’ the court.
"This award is largely thanks to significant contributions from many people over the years.
"I’d like to thank everyone who has played a part in the development of basketball at the university and the Southampton area."
The annual awards recognise the selfless dedication and efforts of various members, organisations, and clubs across the basketball community.
The winners were announced at an online awards ceremony on Monday, December 19.
