A BUSY level crossing was closed to vehicles following an accident involving a mobility scooter.

The incident at the crossing in Junction Road, Totton, initially sparked fears the road could remain shut until Tuesday.

People travelling to a nearby Asda supermarket were among those affected by the closure.

Part of the barrier on the northern side of the crossing was damaged in the accident.

Pictures on social media show one of the red and white poles lying in the road.

People nearby rushed to help after a woman on a mobility scooter was in collision with the barrier. Another woman and her partner pulled the scooter off the line.

Posting on social media one of the people at the scene said: "She was a bit shaken up [but] no injuries thank goodness."

The crossing is a few hundred metres from Totton railway station and spans the Southampton to Bournemouth line, which cuts the town centre in two.

Totton councillor David Harrison spent years campaigning for the crossing to be replaced by a bridge.
