SOUTHAMPTON will once again be bursting with red and golden colours as Chinese New Year celebrations return this month.

To mark the year of the rabbit, the Chinese community will be putting on free shows and workshops across the city.

The festivities are organised by WeCommunity and UK Shaolin, in partnership with Southampton City Council and Mayflower Studios (MAST). 

 

A spokesperson of the Chinese association said: "In the spring festival of the rabbit year in 2023, we are full of expectations and looking forward to celebrating the annual Chinese New Year with you. 

"Let us gather together at Southampton City Centre to sing and dance. 

"You will see a parade of dragons and lions from Guildhall Square to
Westquay Shopping Centre.

"And a range of performances will also be conducted inside Westquay
Shopping Centre on Sunday, January 22."

The Chinese New Year celebration will last 16 days, starting on January 21, and finishing on Sunday, February 5. 

The opening event takes place in Guildhall Square and MAST and will be packed with public displays, including traditional lion and dragon dance performances. 

Children will also have a chance to take part in the free cultural and craft workshops.

Along with their friends, they can take part and learn how to play Workshops on Chinese chess, lantern-making, paper-cutting and rabbit-moulding.

On Sunday, January 22, there will be a free staged show inside Westquay from 11.30am until 4pm. 

Visitors will be able to see and take part in a Kungfu display, Taichi, Chinese folk songs, dance, and other cultural performances, as well as a range of workshops. 

On the last day, festivities will end with a lantern festival, which takes place from 3pm-5pm, at Guildhall Square.

Organisers are also accepting donations or any kind of help from independent businesses and organisations. 

They said: "If you are interested in offering your help, support, or making a donation towards this CNY celebration event and the lantern festival activity, small or large, we would be very thankful."

The Sunday, January 22 and Sunday, February 5 events are organised Chinese Association along with Southampton City Council, Westquay and John Hansard Gallery. 

Meanwhile, WeCommunity has teamed up with UK Shaolin and Mayflower Studios (MAST) to organise Saturday, January 21 and Saturday, February 4 shows.
