CAMPAIGNERS in Southampton held a peaceful demonstration this weekend to support Iran's fight for freedom. 

They gathered at the Bargate on Saturday to stand in solidarity with the women of Iran. 

The death of Iranian woman, Mahsa Amini, has sparked demonstrations and protests all around the world.

The 22-year-old died last September after being held in police custody in Tehran for allegedly violating strict hijab rules.

In Southampton, the members of the Anglo-Iranian Academics Society braved rainy and blustery conditions to hold an exhibition.

A spokesperson for the society said: "Our association has joined the campaign to highlight the struggle of the Iranian people for their basic human rights.

"Our colleagues across the UK, have joined a campaign in solidarity with, and support for the nationwide protests in Iran led by women and youths."

The display portrayed the bravery and power of Iranian women and young people.

It showed pictures of all the protesters who have been killed or arrested in Iran for criticising the government. 

The peaceful demonstration was held between 11am and 3pm and protestors were seen carrying banners stating: "I Support a Free Iran." 

City councillors were also seen taking part in the rally.
