IT WAS a night of glitz, glamour, dancing and celebration as dignitaries and volunteers marked 17 years of a community radio station.
The Unity 101 17th Anniversary Celebration and Achievement event, held at the Novotel in Southampton, drew a packed crowd - with a keynote speech from the High Sheriff of Hampshire, Lady Edwina Grosvenor.
Among the award recipients was Southampton’s own Malkeat Singh, who was honoured with the lifetime achievement award.
He told the gathered audience - including council leader Satvir Kaur, and crime commissioner Donna Jones - of the importance of work in anti-racism.

Announcing the award, internet provider toob’s Guilhem Poussot said: “Driven and passionate about his work, he has always believed in giving back to the community and making a positive contribution to society.
“Malkeat has a deep understanding about different faiths, cultures, and traditions; he has fostered cohesive partnerships with residents and community groups and has supported the development of positive relations with stakeholders in and around the Solent region.”
Mr Singh is currently working for the city council as a community engagement officer.
Dr Abdoulie Sanneh picked up the community award for his work with charities in the city.
The audience was told how he studies for a doctorate at the University of Southampton and is the co-founder and chair of the United Voice of Africa Association.
The Oasis Academy Mayfield award went to Tyler Godden, Isla Croll picked up the Barton Peveril Sixth Form gong, and Cantell’s Mia Densham was also honoured. Jordan Hockless was the recipient of the apprenticeship award, presented by Michael Steel from Kiwi Education.
