Long-standing business owners have raised their concerns after motorists keep blocking a life-saving facility in Southampton

Over the years, St Mary's Fire Station has put up with people dumping their vehicles outside its entrance

Their actions can delay or prevent firefighters from attending serious incidents.

To tackle nuisance parking, Southampton City Council could be installing a camera near the fire station.

The potential move is part of a series of possible measures under the city council's £1m camera scheme

If approved, automatic number plate recognition cameras would be installed in hotspots, including the fire station, to prevent irresponsible parking and driving.

After hearing the details of the scheme, the area's residents and traders have backed it and said that it would make a "huge difference".

Alam Avdul, who runs a budget shop on St Mary's Road, says that parking in front of the fire station "happens a lot".

He added: "It can get really, really bad.

"Sometimes you will find people parking all along the double yellow line.

"Evening is particularly bad as everyone is getting off work and doing their grocery shopping.

"The council should have started installing the CCTV cameras a while ago.

"I am all for them."

Owner of Nass Sklen Shop, Fathey Singh, said: "I have been running this shop for almost ten years, and this is a busy road and area.

"You can expect to see a lot of traffic up and down the road.

"I know this is a residential area, so building parking spaces here would be difficult.

"But we need to work with the council so that they can offer a little bit more flexibility

with parking."

Meanwhile, Senat Roy, who has been running Sk Roy Pharmacy for over 30 years on St Mary's Road, said: "We see double parking or parking on yellow lines in the area all the time.

"They park anywhere they can try to park.

"Parking in front of the fire station is just terrible.

"A few years ago, during Christmas, a person crashed into my front door.

"Some people just don't have respect for rules and regulations.

"I think, installing CCTV cameras would be helpful and make a difference."
