HAMPSHIRE'S police and crime commisioner has demanded urgent action to tackle what she described as the "abusive culture" in the Metropolitan Police.

Donna Jones, the county's police and crime commissioner, spoke out after a Met officer pleaded guilty to a string of sexual offences including 24 rapes.

PC David Carrick, 48, admitted the offences when he appeared at London's Southwark Crown Court on Monday. He has since been kicked out of the police.

Ms Jones described Carrick's crimes as "wholly unacceptable" and a "stain on British policing".

She tweeted: "Urgent action must now be taken to address the abusive culture in the Met police for victims and also for the decent honest cops serving in the Met."

Hampshire police investigated Carrick in 2016 when he was the suspect in a harassment case - but he was not arrested.

The Met has apologised after it emerged he had come to the attention of police over nine incidents, including rape allegations, between 2000 and 2021.

Assistant Commissioner Barbara Gray said: "We should have spotted his pattern of abusive behaviour and because we didn't, we missed opportunities to remove him from the organisation."
