CAMPAIGNERS are backing plans to transform a derelict "dumping ground" beside a Southampton station by building almost 50 apartments.

Supporters of the scheme say the resulting influx of residents will make the area safer by deterring crime, anti-social behaviour and fly-tipping.

City leaders are studying proposals to build a six-storey block of flats at Horseshoe Bridge, which adjoins St Denys station.

The application has sparked almost 20 letters of support from Southampton residents who say the scheme will improve a "deprived" part of the city.

Ibrahim Sen, of Crabwood Close, says: "The road leading down to the site is a dumping ground for waste and at night can be quite scary walking through.

"The proposed development will provide much-needed investment in this part of Portswood and can only be a good thing."

Gerry Roberts, of Empress Road, adds: "This will bring better lighting and security to the area, which sadly suffers from certain nighttime activities and anti-social behaviour."

Nigel Barnes-Evans, of Avenue Road, has also contacted the council to voice his support for the scheme.

"Development of this site will improve the local area and make it safer for people walking to and from the station. It should also reduce the amount of fly-tipping."

Other comments have been sent anonymously.

One says: "I pass through Horseridge Bridge with my children and worry about who may be coming. We desperately need more people living in the area."

The scheme is also being backed by the City of Southampton Society, which has praised the design.

As reported in the Daily Echo, the applicant, Saeed Poswall, has submitted a proposal for 47 apartments.

Four years ago he was given planning permission to provide 16 flats on the same site but the homes were never built.

A planning statement that accompanies the most recent proposal says: "This latest scheme seeks to provide a more deliverable project, accommodating a greater mix of residential units in an effective and efficient manner."

The statement cites the large number of high-rise buildings that have already been approved in the city.

It adds: "The existing [approved] scheme is not viable and by definition no longer deliverable in the current residential market and with rising construction costs.

The proposed development would deliver "much-needed housing in a very sustainable location in the heart of the city".
