It's 100 not out for cricket lover Norman Gould who is today celebrating his century.

The father of one, grandfather of two, and great-grandfather of two toasted his 100th birthday with a party at Chandler's Ford Central Club at the weekend.

The former Chandler's Ford station master walks there regularly from his nearby home, as well as enjoying a game of snooker at the Methodist Church and regular keep fit sessions at the Age Concern Hall.

He previously appeared in the Daily Echo when he joined TV gardening expert Charlie Dimmock and the mayor of Eastleigh to reopen Chandler's Ford station in 2003, following a near 35-year absence.

Norman was born in Wellow in Somerset in 1923.

Apart from a few years as a navigator for the Royal Air Force during the war, he worked on the railways all his life, starting as a junior clerk at Wincanton Station. He was at Chandler's Ford for many years before becoming a relief station master until his retirement.

Daily Echo:

Norman, his late wife of more than 60 years Eileen and their daughter Denise lived at the Station House at Swaythling.

He was a celebrated bowler for Chandler's Ford Cricket Club in the 50s and won awards and commendations for his blooms in a number of Daily Echo gardening competitions over the years.

Norman and his extended family have enjoyed many holidays and adventures by train all over the UK.

Daily Echo:

These days, he loves to spend time with his grandchildren James and Peter and great-grandchildren Archie and Fyfe, as well as watching all his favourite sports on Sky Sports.

Norman puts the secret of his long life down to fresh air and eating well.

Every morning, he makes himself a full English or a big breakfast of some kind, it's another decent meal for lunch,  often from the seniors' menu at the Monks Brook pub following a walk to the local shop, and cheese and biscuits or similar in the evening in front of the TV.
