Flags from a historical Southampton landmark have mysteriously disappeared - and this is why.

Eagle-eyed residents raised the question after spotting the missing flags outside the Bargate.

The two flags are normally held by two lions at the original entrance, but there has been a notable absence in recent days.

The Echo understands that one of the flags was stolen and has not been returned.

However, the second flag was collected by the conservator to make a replica to replace the missing flag.

When asked about the cost of replacing the flag, Southampton City Council was unable to provide a figure.

The lions were removed for essential repairs in 2020, before returning to strand guard in 2021.

It is believed they represent the legend of Sir Bevois, who, as legend tells it, founded the city.
