PLANS for 14 new homes and a veterinary surgery have been thrown out.

Eastleigh Borough Council has rejected an application by Vested Outsourcing Partners to transform a piece of land at Providence Hill, Bursledon.

A council report outlining the authority's decision said the scheme failed to make efficient use of the site.

It criticised the "excessive" amount of land that would be taken up by the surgery.

The application said the proposed development complied with the recently adopted Eastleigh Local Plan, which earmarked the site for residential development.

It added: "A key objective of the Plan is the delivery of new homes with supporting community facilities and social infrastructure.

"The proposal does all of these and will provide a mix of housing types.

"The site provides a sustainable location for housing development which is within easy reach of Bursledon town centre and amenities.

"The provision of veterinary surgery will meet an identified need in the surrounding area."
