A SOUTHAMPTON nursery where children are "curious and keen" has been praised by the education watchdog.

Play Away Day Nursery has been rated 'good' in its most recent Ofsted inspection.

The centre in Anderson Road was rated 'good' in all four categories.

The nursery cares for children aged from a few months old to four years old and had 125 children in its care at the time of the inspection.

Inspectors found that children at the Southampton site are "curious, inquisitive and keen to learn", adding that the manager is "passionate" about providing children with new experiences.

Children from a young age start to learn how to be independent with their self-care skills, such as doing up their coats.

Staff talk highly of the strong team bond and high levels of morale, the report says.

It was noted that staff "comment positively" on the "high level of well-being support that they receive".

Inspectors found the nursery has a broad curriculum that builds on what children know as they progress.

However, the inspector said some staff are "not fully effective" at implementing the curriculum.

The report said staff support children's communication skills in a range of ways and teach children how to use sign language and how to use visual prompts to communicate.

Children who speak English as an additional language are further supported by staff.

Inspectors found that children make good progress in their learning and development.

They found that staff are "passionate" about supporting children with special educational needs and/or disabilities to reach their full potential.

Staff have strong relationships with parents, the report claims.

Inspectors said that parents praise the communication between them and the staff.

However, parents are not consistently aware of their children's next steps.

As a result, not all parents know how to support children's next steps at home.

Play Away runs three nurseries in the area - one in Southampton, one in West End and one in Totton.

Last month, Play Away Day Nursery in West End was rated inadequate for being "unhygienic" and putting babies at risk.
