SAINTS have sacked manager Nathan Jones after seven defeats in his eight Premier League matches.

First-team coaches Chris Cohen and Alan Sheehan have also left the club. Rubén Sellés will take charge of training and prepare the team ahead of next weekend’s game against Chelsea.

Saints had scored just twice from open play in the Premier League during Jones’s tenure, while his side took the lead first in a game for the first time before the eventual defeat to Wolves on Saturday.

Jones had overseen good results in cup competitions with victory over Manchester City in the EFL Cup quarter-final and an FA Cup fifth-round tie versus Grimsby Town still to come.

But the club remain bottom of the Premier League with the gap opening up to four points from safety following the Wolves result, with 16 matches still to play. Saints had been a goal and a man up by 27 minutes but were eventual 2-1 losers thanks to Joao Gomes’s last-minute finish.

Jones headed straight down the tunnel at full-time and had an air of resignation during his final post-match press conference, in which he told the Daily Echo: “You make your own luck.”

Jones’s only Premier League victory came at Everton in January thanks to a James Ward-Prowse brace, after Amadou Onana’s headed opener.

Jones’s tenure was regularly punctuated with supporter confusion and frustration thanks to an authentic but misguided media approach, which often focussed on his own achievements.

It was felt by many in the media that he needed to own his role as Saints manager, after unprecedented achievement at Luton Town, but Jones was on the defensive from the start.

The Welshman faced supporters chanting “get out of our club” after just a few disappointing defeats, following a six-week mini-pre-season during the World Cup break, ahead of the season’s return.
