Bar managers say they are excited about a scheme to transform Bedford Place.
Work is underway to create a new plaza at the heart of Southampton’s nightlife.
Widened pavements, more seating and improved lighting are just some of the changes taking place in Bedford Place and Carlton Place.
The council has also reduced the speed limit in the Polygon area to 20mph.
Now five weeks into the project, people working in the area have voiced their approval.

Dom Hutchinson, the assistant manager at Revolution Southampton, said: “We’re very excited for the renovations to be completed, and for the area to be reopened again to the public because of the hope it will increase footfall - which is something that’s been very much impacted by the roadworks taking place.”
Dom believes that the changes will make the area safer and more inviting.
He added: “The added lighting will definitely make an impact towards Southampton’s nightlife safety, which is always great because it will mean people want to come out here more.”
Matt Turcyzk, general manager at XOXO Southampton, said that temporary road closures during the Covid pandemic had been received positively and ‘worked a treat for us’.
He said: “Obviously I think it’s a great idea for the road to get shut and be pedestrianised.
“Everyone feels safer, and people seem to sit outside more, so it’s a great idea, definitely. I’m looking forward to it.”
The council says the work is expected to finish by mid-April.
Carlton Place will be permanently closed to traffic and more space created for outdoor seating.
It will also be used for ‘pop-up’ events and markets.
New CCTV and lighting will improve visibility at night time.
The executive director of GO! Southampton, Stephen Manion, previously said the revamp would offer safe and relaxing spaces for people enjoying the area’s restaurants, shops and clubs.
