A Southampton music venue has cancelled its upcoming Katie Hopkins' stand-up show following widespread criticism.
The Attic Southampton had booked the controversial columnist and political commentator, known for her far-right views, as part of her 'Live Laugh Love' comedy tour.
However, soon after the announcement, bands and acts due to perform at the venue in Winsor Road, Totton pulled their shows as a sign of protest.
The club has now announced the show on May 3 will no longer go ahead and those who had booked tickets to see Hopkins will be refunded "with immediate effect".
A post on The Attic's Facebook page reads: "We were aware Katie is controversial in her opinions."
It added: "Having looked into this further we completely understand why people have been affected by the booking."
Hopkins, a former contestant on The Apprentice and Celebrity Big Brother, was sacked by LBC in 2017 for a controversial tweet in response to the Manchester Arena bombing.
Three years later, she was banned from Twitter for violating its hateful content policy.
The statement added: "Here at the Attic, we accept all people, no matter what race, gender or sexuality and we hope people feel comfortable and safe when attending music gigs or comedy nights. Our venue is a non-political neutral venue, inclusive and welcoming to everyone.
"Views of staff and management do not align with Katie Hopkins views, nor do we wish to upset any of our customers. We apologize if this caused upset to those believing Katie shouldn't be given a platform and also those who had booked tickets to come to the event.
"We thank all our fantastic staff and customers for their patience in what has been a very difficult and divisive matter."
The Attic had also been criticised for booking Frank Sanazi, a cabaret artist who imitates Hitler. His show on July 8 is no longer listed on the club's website.
- Editor's note: The venue's statement was edited on March 13, 2023 after a dispute was raised.
