Southampton's street food scene looks set to be transformed as new organisers step in to "bring a market the city can be proud of".
The weekly Saturday market by the Bargate is in for a revamp after being taken over by Hampshire event managers, The Village Pop Up.
Meanwhile, an underused patch of land near Westquay could be used for live music, sports, exhibitions and more.
A spokesperson said: “We’re very honoured to be the custodians of this market and to keep it going for the city.
“We have taken over the market in Southampton and what we’re trying to do is revamp and bring up the standard ahead of the summer.
“The main goal would be to turn it into a street food market, especially at the front bit of the Bargate [facing Above Bar Street] which stays open longer, beyond 8pm in the summer.
“At the back end of the Bargate we should be able to get vendors selling some bags, clothing, vintage clothes and homewares.”

They added: “It’s important because people want to be out and about doing things, and with the types of cuisine we’re trying to bring flavours to the world.
“If you look at some cities across the UK they have street food markets but as far as we’re aware there isn’t one in Southampton so we’re trying to bring that to the city and bring them a market that the city can be proud of.”
The Village Pop Up is welcoming vendors looking to grow their business to join the market.
“If you are a trader or an aspiring trader this is what The Village Pop Up is about.
“We want to help local traders for any business - that’s why the branding is important so that we can help businesses involved in the market.”
This weekend, the market will be held on Friday and Saturday from 10.30am to 7.30pm.
