A £4.5m fund to help struggling families in Southampton is 'not enough,' a city councillor has said.

Southampton City Council will be receiving £4.5m from the government.

The grant is to help those who are not eligible for other government funding, such as the £900 cost-of-living payment.

It was created to compensate for cuts to benefits.

The city council’s cabinet approved the acceptance of the grant in Tuesday’s cabinet meeting.

Councillor Toqeer Kataria, the cabinet member for communities and customer engagement, said the cash will help but added it ‘does not go far enough’.

He said: “The household support fund is designed to help residents with the increase in living costs, however we have seen that the fund itself does not go far enough to help residents.

“It does not support all residents that are on low incomes, nor has the funding been enough to cover the initial reason it was created.”

One of the focuses is on providing children in struggling families with activities in the half-term holidays.
