SOUTHAMPTON residents have hit out at plans for a "disgusting and monstrous" 5G mast.
Plans have been submitted to Southampton City Council seeking permission to put up a 17m-high 5G tower on Wimpson Lane in Millbrook.
The proposals were submitted by CK Hutchinson Networks (UK) Ltd, who said the tower will be slimline.
But the plans have sparked anger among residents in the area who have objected to the mast being built.
Four objections have been submitted to the council and each letter was submitted anonymously.
In a letter to the council, one resident said: "I am appalled by this blatant disregard that these companies have, it makes it seem like all they care about is profit and not the actual human lives they are upsetting as they quietly roll these out right under everybody's noses.
"I strongly object to the placement of any mast at this site, it will be a disgusting view to look at, monstrous and has no place in a residential street.
"It is not an appropriate location for such a thing, towering way above all buildings, trees and street furniture in the area, it is ugly and should not be placed in such a populated area especially this close to a primary school."
Another resident, an 84-year-old woman, added: "The chosen location for this development is too close to houses and the primary school, it would be an eye sore and stand out like a sore thumb in the area.
"No consideration has been given for the local residents' thoughts on the matter.
"These developments should be placed away from homes and buildings and out of sight."
In a covering letter, CK Hutchinson Networks (UK) Ltd said that the site was identified as "the most suitable option that balances operational need with local planning policies and national planning policy guidance".
They added it would "benefit" the general public due to the mobile phone services it would provide.
If the plans are approved, it would be built on a grass verge on Wimpson Lane and would include six antennas, three equipment cabinets and one GPS module.
A decision on the plans is yet to be made.
