AN EVENT paying tribute to the passengers and crew who lost their lives on the Titanic will be held in Southampton this weekend.
To mark the 111th anniversary of the ship's sinking, members of the British Titanic Society will bring their annual convention to the city.
They will pay tribute to the 1,504 people who died after the ship collided with an iceberg north of the Atlantic between April 14 and 15, 1912.
Over 500 households from across Southampton lost a family member in the tragedy.
The convention will be hosted at the Leonardo Royal Grand Harbour Hotel in Southampton’s famous Grand Harbour.
The hotel is just yards from where the ill-fated cruise ship spent a week prior to its departure for its maiden and final voyage on April 10, 1912.
The convention will take place from Friday, April 14 until Sunday, April 16, and will feature a range of lectures by prominent Titanic historians as well as visits to Titanic and maritime historical places of interest.
The British Titanic Society Chairman, David Scott-Beddard, said: "We’re delighted to be returning to Southampton in 2023, a place we regard as the society’s spiritual home.
"After the cancellation of events during the Covid pandemic, it is our first annual conference to be hosted in the city since 2019.
"Our 2022 conference in Cobh, Ireland, was our best conference to date, with a programme of the highest quality lectures, exhibitions, and guided visits.
"We are determined to ensure that this is successfully built upon and our 2023 event exceeds all expectations; we already have some incredible surprises lined up for our delegates."
