A man who has dedicated his life to making a difference in Southampton has been recognised with a special award.

Mr Malkeat Singh was honoured during the Lord Mayor’s Award’s Evening for being ‘an integral community leader’.

He was awarded a certificate of recognition. 

Mr Singh has worked at Southampton City Council for over 20 years, helping to build ‘sustainable’ partnerships and collaborations with a range of stakeholders.

During his time in Southampton, he has been the recipient of awards and is highly-respected within the community.

Speaking on the accolade, Mr Singh said: “It was a great privilege to join The Right Worshipful Lord Mayor of Southampton, Cllr Jacqui Rayment, as a quest to the first Lord Mayor’s awards evening, at the Lord Mayor’s Parlour.

“I was so humbled and honoured to be recognised for this award, I was born in and have resided in the city since birth and have always served to build and strengthen community relationships.”

Lord Mayor, Cllr Jacqui Rayment, presented the award to Mr Singh.

She said: “This award is for the amazing contribution you have made to the city of Southampton.

“The work you have undertaken to help make a difference in your community and workplace is commendable and deserves recognition.”

Mr Singh was born in Southampton in 1958 to parents Mr Harman Singh, who came to the UK from India in 1951, and Mother Mrs Jaswant Kaur.

He is one of eight children and the family, including his own children and wider family members, have made a ‘significant contribution’ to the public and private sectors in the city.

Accompanying Mr Singh at the awards was his son, Lakbir Singh.

He said “It’s a real privilege to see my father being recognised for his years of dedicated community service to our diverse and multicultural communities here in Southampton.

“As a family are striving to follow in our grandfathers footsteps and continue his work and legacy.”
