THE Home Secretary, Suella Braverman, has visited Southampton to speak to residents in the Peartree area.

Ms Braverman, who is also MP for Fareham, joined the Southampton Conservative leader Cllr Daniel Fitzhenry and other candidates on Friday.

The group set about door-knocking and speaking to residents about their plans ahead of the upcoming election.

Cllr Fizhenry wrote on Twitter: "Thank you to the Home Secretary @SuellaBraverman for your help campaigning to Get Southampton Moving again.

"A Conservative Council will freeze council tax & repair a record number of roads, pavements & potholes."

The group were in the area for about 90 minutes.

Cllr Fitzhenry said residents spoke with Ms Braverman about rises to the Itchen Bridge fees, rises in council tax and potholes.

But the leader of Southampton Labour and the current administration, Cllr Satvir Kaur said people are "utterly fed up with the Conservative Government, under which we've seen the biggest fall in living standards, crime soaring and our NHS on its knees".

"This local election is an opportunity to send a message to Government Ministers like Braverman that enough is enough.

"Labour locally won't be wasting £250,000 on fixing a private road, as the Tories did when they were in power last in our city.

"It's clear local Conservatives are as incompetent as their friends in Westminster. Labour are taking Southampton forwards, and hope to continue delivering for our great city."

Cllr Fitzhenry added: "People were grateful to us for coming as always.

"Naturally, there were some conversations about national issues but very much focussed on our plans.

"We're always very grateful for support from our Conservative team."
