HUNDREDS of people in the Southampton area are preparing to host street parties for the coronation of King Charles III.

The three-day bank holiday marking the royal occasion will take place from Saturday, May 6 to Monday, May 8.

Though Southampton City Council is yet to confirm the number of street parties taking place in the city, around 50 roads submitted an application to the council for a road closure for the event.

Many hosting parties told the Echo they held successful events for the Queen's Platinum Jubilee last year and want to have "everyone together" for the coronation.

Luccombe Place – Saturday, May 6

Celebrating the crowning of King Charles III on coronation day, Luccombe Place in Shirley will begin the festivities at 2pm.

Resident Joanne Craig, 45, said: “It’s a lovely opportunity for everyone in our street to get together.

“It’s something we like to do once a year, in the past we’ve got together for the jubilee and weddings, so it will be really special to have everyone together for the coronation.”

Canada Road – Saturday, May 6

Canada Road in Woolston will be kicking off its street party at 3pm.

Moira Chambers, 78, remembers her first street party in 1977. She told The Echo: “When we had our first street party, we didn’t even have a road, it was more of a footpath.

“I remember we even had a firework display which was really nice but I’m not sure we’d get away with that now!

“It’s an amazing place to live and it will be extra special as we come together for the coronation.”

Grafton Gardens – Saturday, May 6

Grafton Gardens in Lordswood is having a lower-key feel for its street party as residents come together to enjoy fish and chips in the evening.

Amberley Close – Sunday, May 7

Amberley Close in Botley will gather for its own street party at 2pm.

Mary Bell, 73, said: “We’re having our street party on the Sunday as most people will want to be at home watching the coronation on the Saturday.

“Plus, we figured by having it on the Sunday, people will be off work on the bank holiday Monday, so they can enjoy the celebrations for a little while longer!

“It’s brilliant to bring everyone together during events like these.”

Curlew Square – Sunday, May 7

Curlew Square in Eastleigh will gather on the green from 12pm to mark the historic weekend.

Resident Rebeca Thompson, 43, said: “It’s great because we don’t come together all the time and it’s nice when we do.

“Some of us see each other often whereas others don’t always come out much as we have a few elderly people in the road, but this is something where everyone comes together.

“We’ll have cake for everyone, and people are welcome to stay for as long or as little as they like.”

Singleton Way – Sunday, May 7

Singleton Way in Totton has confirmed a street party from 1pm.

Archery Grove – Sunday, May 7

Woolston’s Archery Grove will come together for a street party between 1pm and 5.15pm.

Whiteley Meadows – Monday, May 8

Whiteley Meadows near Botley will come together for their street party at the end of the bank holiday weekend. Andrea Ingram, 52, told the Daily Echo: “We can’t wait!

“Hopefully the weather holds out for us, and we don’t have torrential rain. Since we decided to have a street party people have been so forthcoming.

“It initially started as four people and now we’ve got the whole road involved where we’re going to have bunting, balloons, ice cream and even a DJ.

“It’s something for everyone to look forward.”
