PLANS to turn a family home into an eight-bed HMO have sparked anger among residents.

Southampton City Council has received a planning application to build a two-storey rear extension on a family home on Atherley Road.

If approved, the house would become an eight-bed HMO.

But residents have hit out at the plans fearing issues with parking and "disturbing the peace".

Nine anonymous objection letters have been submitted to the council opposing the plans.

One resident said: "As a family on the same street, we want to see more family homes in this area, not more HMOs.

"Work has been going on at the property for months already.

"Excavation work has been done at the front and rear of the property and there has been a lot of smoke coming over due to fires in the garden.

"Parking is tight on this road as it is and there have been many road traffic accidents at the Howard / Atherley junction. Adding another HMO will only make this situation worse."

Another added it would create "serious overcrowding" in the local area.

"It is a dreadful thing when landlords can take over an area and dominate and ruin residents' peace of mind merely for gain," they said.

Another resident said: "The proposed development is far too dense and will significantly increase demand for parking on Atherley Road, without providing any extra off-road parking.

"It is already extremely difficult to navigate during busy times and parked cars frequently resort to blocking existing driveways.

"The proposed development is immediately adjacent to an existing high-density development that requires regular access and this will exacerbate the traffic issues."

The plans have been submitted by Julia Alexandrova and the development would consist of eight single bedrooms.

A decision is yet to be made on the plans.
