A discount store has announced its imminent closure amid rising rent costs.

Roger’s Wholesale will permanently shut its warehouse this month.

The shock announcement was made on Wednesday in a video shared on the company’s Facebook page.

Managing director Mark King said it was a ‘sad day’ for the company.

He said: “We’ve successfully traded in Southampton now for nearly six years.

“Over the last year we have been looking for a new site to serve you, our fantastic customers.

“Unfortunately, the landlord wants to put the rent up to an exorbitant amount so we’ve had to take the decision to close our Southampton site.

“It’s a sad day for us because we’ve loved serving you guys in Southampton and it means there will be job losses from that site.”

He goes on to say the site will be closing in the coming three weeks.

Mark said: “We will be shutting the site for good as we move on and upwards.

“Thank you to everybody who has shopped with us over the last few years.

“It’s not a decision we want to make but it’s something we have to do now.

“I’m sorry we can’t do more.”

Described as ‘the UK’s biggest gone past best before warehouse,’ Roger’s Wholesale arrived in Southampton nearly six years ago.

Located in the Manor Industrial Estate in Millbrook, the store has offered several deals and exciting items to customers in the city.

But customers will now have to travel to the company’s shop in Poole if they wish to bag a bargain.

Mark added: “We’ve tried everything we possibly can to stay in the area.

“Hopefully you will continue to shop with us in our Poole warehouse.”
