In a statement read out in court, she said she has “constant anxiety” and had become “a shell of who [she] was” before.

“It’s taken every single bit of strength I had to report it”, she added.

Judge Peter Henry told him: “Strangling people is extremely dangerous.

"There is a wafer-thin difference between someone being left alive, with brain damage or death.

"I have no doubt that you do pose a high risk of causing serious harm."

Campbell, who has 37 convictions from 78 offences has PTSD, borderline personality disorder, bipolar and ADHD, it was heard in mitigation.

Gemma White, for Campbell, said these “may have some link to the root cause of this offending".

She added: “This is the only incident or offence of sexual offending.

“Time in custody for Mr Campbell has not always been easy. [He has] been transferred to a vulnerable wing as a result of being attacked in prison.”

She added that Campbell has been working in prison to understand his own emotions including doing relationship work from prison.

He was given a 15-year extended sentence on Thursday.

The judge imposed a nine-year custodial sentence with a six-year extended licence period.

A restraining order was also made banning him from contacting his victim.

Detective Constable Joanne Boyd said: "He now has to come to terms with the fact that his actions have consequences in the form of a lengthy prison sentence. Campbell’s actions that evening will have a significant impact on his future.

“I am hopeful that (the) sentencing will allow for the victim to begin to process her ordeal, provide her with that closure and begin to move forward with her life knowing that Jordan Campbell can no longer cause her harm.

“We have been able to successfully take a very dangerous man off the streets with him now behind bars for a significant period of time; who will then continue to be monitored upon his release to ensure he no longer poses a risk to the victim or wider society.

“We would urge anyone who feels they are a victim of domestic abuse not to suffer in silence. Please call the police or a domestic abuse support service. Your calls will be taken seriously.”
