Royal fans moved onto The Mall to take selfies and film the helicopters and planes as they passed over.
Others popped champagne corks and shouted “God Save the King”.
Crowds on The Mall and surrounding the Queen Victoria Memorial at the front of Bucking Palace cheered as the Royal Air Force Aerobatic Team – the Red Arrows – flew overhead.
Alan Dodd, Graham Dodd and Victoria Dodd travelled to London from Southampton to experience the flyover.
Victoria said: “It was so unexpected. We thought it had been cancelled.”
Graham added: “It makes you proud to be British.”
Republican protesters booed and made gestures in Trafalgar Square as the blue, white and red plumes from the Red Arrows in the military flypast filled the skies above.
