Blood-covered man breaks into Hampshire house in his pants

Jean Sleep, 52, and her partner, Matt Drain, 54, were asleep in their North Baddesley bungalow on Friday when Matt was woken up by a noise at 1am and went to investigate.

As he checked his porch, he heard glass shattering at the back of the house and was confronted by the terrifying sight of the intruder.

Speaking to the Daily Echo, Matt said: "It was like a scene from a horror movie; it was absolute carnage.

"Jean hasn't been able to sleep in the house since Friday.

"She is so shaken up and just not comfortable being at home alone."

The invader had burst through their glass back doors, was bleeding profusely and was screaming.

Matt said: "I think he cut his wrist and shoulder when he was trying to get in.

"He didn't look right in his mind."

Thinking on his feet and showing incredible bravery, Matt restrained the man.

He said: "I asked if he was okay and if he knew where he was.

"I didn't want to physically hurt him."

Now covered in blood himself, as pictured above, he screamed for Jean to call the police.

She said: "I don't know why, but I didn't hear the sound of the glass door breaking. 

"But I woke up when Matt was screaming for help.

"As I went to check, I saw Matt fighting this really big man in the kitchen and trying to restrain him.

"It was horrific and so scary.

"Our neighbours were woken up too and tried to call the police as well."

While Matt struggled to keep the man at bay - dousing him and their house in blood in the process - the couple said neither themselves or their neighbours could get through to the police via 999 for ten minutes.

Police said the first of several calls came in at 1.11am, with reports of break-ins at Matt and Jean's property and another on the same road.

Officers were on the scene in 18 minutes, calling paramedics at 1.29am.

According to police, there were reports the man was armed with a knife but this was not located.

Matt said: "It took six officers to restrain one man, but I was doing it all by myself before.

"When the ambulance arrived, they dragged the man out of our house. 

"It's shocking that it took police so long to get there in the first place."

Police confirmed the man was not arrested but was taken to hospital to be treated for 'serious injuries'.

The aftermath of the incident left Matt and Jean's house looking like something from a nightmare.

The intruder's blood stains have been left everywhere, with smeared hand prints all over their walls and staircase, blood-soaked floors, ruined furniture and soiled towels, bedding and pillows.

In fact, there was so much blood that the couple had to take HIV tests and are awaiting their results.

The couple says their insurance won't cover the damages and they will have to pay to replace the soiled homeware and deep clean the house themselves.

Despite this, Matt said: "I hope he gets the help he needs."

Following the initial police response, the couple said they were 'disappointed' not hear from the force until four days later, on Tuesday, when officers came back to their house to record a statement.

A police spokesperson said that officers did not come sooner due to being on rest days and that Matt and Jean were told this on Friday.

Police continue to investigate the incident.
