A doctor who is said to own several houses down the same road has been given permission by Southampton City Council to extend, despite being met with nothing but objections.

Dr Erica Fogg, who owns and rents out the properties to university students in Holyrood Avenue in Portswood, applied to extend the property at number 10.

The application consists of an almost-five-metre rear extension to facilitate a larger kitchen and dining room, which will open directly into the garden.

The house is already classed as a house of multiple occupation for up to six unrelated occupants – and neighbours fear the extension is the first step in increasing capacity.

Both direct neighbours are shared houses.

Six people objected.

One worried resident contacted the council to express their concerns.

They said: “Noise will increase for residents, as the house will be closer to neighbours, and when the garden is used, which is frequently in the case of the local HMOs, the noise will be pushed beyond the boundaries of the property and impede our own enjoyment of our garden – and at times impact our sleep.

“We’re happy to share Highfield with students and HMOs, we both work at the university, but feel this extension would only benefit the landlord in making this a more attractive social house option, and therefore request that you do not approve it.”

Planning officers said that any noise nuisance would be a ‘matter for Environmental Health’.

Dr Fogg would have to put forward a separate application to increase the number of people allowed to live in the property.

The city council’s planning panel granted permission to the extension at a meeting on Tuesday.
