A JUDGE has told a dangerous driver he created a “very serious risk of death and injury” when he got into a car drunk and under the influence of cocaine.

Craig Procter was jailed for eight years and six months on Thursday after the crash that killed Mia Wort on the A27 Kanes Hill.

The young mother had been the passenger in the Ford Focus driven by her partner Sam Hotston in the early hours of July 17, 2021.

A court heard how Procter had been in the pub the previous day and having returned to his mother’s house, the pair had argued about his drinking.

Despite this, when she went to bed, he took his mum’s car keys and drove her Audi A3 while double the legal limit.

Judge Christopher Parker KC said by doing this he had created a “very serious risk of death and injury to the public”.

Referring to Procter’s attempts to escape justice, he said: “You could have stayed at the scene. You didn’t.”

Procter was found up the road from the crash stumbling due to his drunkenness.

He was arrested but denied being involved, telling officers the driver of the Audi had "run off into the woods".

He later admitted to police in a statement that he had been driving.

Judge Parker added that he had shown a “complete disregard of your mother’s well-intentioned warnings to you.

“As far as mitigating features are concerned there are absolutely none.”

Procter was also disqualified from driving for five years with a four-year and three-month extension to take into account the time he will serve in custody.
