A SOUTHAMPTON neighbourhood could be getting a milk and milkshake vending machine should plans be approved by civic chiefs.

Plans have been submitted to Southampton City Council seeking permission to install a milk vending machine on Oakley Road.

If approved, the vending machine will be installed outside Costcutter, and will allow residents to buy fresh milk 24 hours a day.

The vending machine will also offer a range of syrups to create milkshakes.

Customers will be able to purchase fresh milk in 1L glass bottles at £1.50 a bottle.

There will also be an option for a reusable glass bottle which costs £2.20, according to the Michelmersh Manor Farm website.

The plans have been submitted by John Drake, of Michelmersh Dairy Ltd.

Michelmersh Manor Farm is a family-run farm based in Romsey that currently milks around 300 cows on five robotic milking machines.

They already have a number of milk vending machines installed including three in Romsey - Woodley Village Hall, Drummonds Butchers, and the Brazen Butchers.

The plans state that the landlord of Costcutters, Mr Jatinder Singh, has agreed to have the milk vending machine installed on the currently redundant concrete step which was previously the entrance to the shop.

Mr Drake said: "The designated Michelmoo Facebook page has received many positive comments regarding the other four milk vending machines installed in the Test Valley region and in turn the Facebook page informs and updates users on topical farming issues and thereby offers an educational element which is much appreciated by customers and followers."

He added that the installation is "on a modest scale" and "does not impact significantly on the local environment or character of the area".

A decision on the plans is yet to be made by Southampton City Council.
