A STRUGGLING GP surgery has been taken over by the second new health group in six months a bid to improve the service.
Bury Road Surgery in Gosport was slammed in a damning CQC report in February, when the health watchdogs rated it 'inadequate' - the lowest rating - and discovered high numbers of patients had not had the care they needed.
Shortly after, Hampshire and Isle of Wight Integrated Care Board requested that PHL Group step in to help manage the surgery, based at Gosport War Memorial Hospital.
But in a snap CQC inspection in April, inspectors saw little improvement - so the Blossom Health Group took over on July 1.
At the time of the unanounced targeted inspection, there had been various staff resignations and staffing challenges at the surgery, the report said.
The health watchdog found that governance systems remained "ineffective", including medication management and monitoring of care and treatment provided to patients.
Inspectors said there was a "lack of leadership" at the surgery, adding that staff "were not appropriately supported to ensure care and treatment for patients was effective".
The report, published on June 30, also highlighted a "limited oversight" in ensuring that "patients’ needs were assessed and reviewed appropriately and monitored in accordance with national guidance".
Blossom Health currently runs Staunton Surgery and Park Lane Medical Centre, which are both rated as good by the CQC.
A spokesperson from PHL told the Daily Echo: "Following the CQC report in February 2023, at the request of the Hampshire and Isle of Wight ICB, PHL Group stepped in to provide practice management support for Bury Road, which included administrative functions to support the clinical workflow, ensured the surgery was well staffed and liaised with Commissioners and practice management to support the delivering the CQC action plan which includes following the appropriate Governance process.
"Since then, Blossom Health Group have announced that they are taking over running the practice as of July 1, which has been widely praised by the local Gosport community and local MP Caroline Dinenage."
