A WEATHER warning has been issued across Hampshire as Met Office warns of "unseasonably" high winds.

Wind speeds are predicted to reach highs of 50mph over the weekend, with the warning in place from 9am on Saturday, July 15.

A statement on the Met Office website says: "A deep area of low pressure will affect parts of the UK on Saturday with some very strong gusts of wind likely to its south. A blustery and showery day (with some thunder) will see winds gust widely to 40 mph, and locally up to 50 to 55 mph during the daytime.

"The strongest gusts are likely to occur mainly, but by no means exclusively, over hills and along the south coast. Some minor damage and travel disruption is likely.

"Winds will moderate later in the evening and overnight."

The warning covers the south of England, including Hampshire, with Winchester, Basingstoke, Andover, Southampton and Salisbury all affected by the warning.

The Met Office warned that delays to road, air and ferry transport are likely, as is short-term loss of power. There will also likely be delays for high-sided vehicles on exposed routes and bridges, with damage to trees or temporary structures such as tents or marquees likely to occur.

The office also warned that some coastal routes, sea fronts and coastal communities will be affected by large waves or spray.
