Plans to demolish a two-storey building and replace it with seven flats have been given the green light.
Smart Homes Southampton Ltd will build a four-storey block with a basement in Onslow Road, Bevois Valley, after winning approval to demolish a two-storey mid-terrace block housing an empty takeaway unit and first-floor flat.
The buildings are currently in ‘poor condition’ and have reached ‘the end of their economic life’, according to the applicant's planning statement submitted to Southampton City Council.
Two new commercial spaces will be built, along with the seven one-bed flats.
No car park spaces will be provided in the scheme. There will be a ten-space bike shed at the back of the block.
The planning statement said: “The applicant has carefully weighed up and considered the travel needs of occupiers of the development, having regard to the site’s proximity to the city centre and Portswood District Centre via bus service and the relative proximity to Southampton Central railway station.
“Occupiers will be encouraged to walk, cycle or use public transport to fulfil their daily requirements.”
The flats would be accessible through a common sideway fitted with a secure entrance point from Onslow Road.
Smart Homes Southampton Ltd hopes the proposal will aid economic growth.
The company's application added: “The development performs an important social role by providing housing for future generations.”
The applicant said the development would help to improve the appearance of the building by replacing the ‘rather tired’ look of the current premises.
No objections were made to the plans.
They were given conditional approval subject to conditions.
