Police were called shortly after 10pm on Saturday to a report that a man had sustained serious injuries at an address in James Street in St Mary's.

He was rushed to the hospital and remains in a serious condition.

Police have now arrested a 66-year-old man from Southampton on suspicion of attempted murder.

He remains in police custody at the current time.

Southampton Chief Inspector Christopher Douglas said: “We know that reports of this nature will understandably be concerning to the public, however, we would like to reassure you that this incident took place between people known to each other and we do not believe there to be any wider risk to anybody else at the current time.

“A 36-hour warrant of further detention has been granted by magistrates this morning, giving us further time to question the man in custody and fully investigate the circumstances leading up to this incident.

“You will see an increased police presence in the area today as officers continue conducting enquiries, please do come and speak to them if you have any questions or concerns.”
