RESIDENTS have expressed their shock and concern after a stabbing victim was left in a critical condition following an alleged attempted murder in a Southampton street.
A 66-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder following the incident on James Street in St Mary at around 10pm on Saturday and continues to be questioned by officers.
The victim, a 47-year-old man, was rushed to hospital after he was stabbed in the chest.
He remains in a serious condition.
During the incident, armed police officers, helicopters, and an ambulance were spotted at the scene by residents.

A James Street resident Richard Edwards told the Echo: "I heard helicopters going round and round on Saturday.
"There were two police cars and a police van.
"I had no idea what was going on - but it is worrying."
Meanwhile, Gina Reed, whose 83-year-old mum Audrey White lives near the scene, said: "My mum told me that she could hear a helicopter and sirens late at night. She was shaken up.
"There is a lot that goes on around here, and it is not a brilliant area.
"Usually, we see a couple of police officers on foot patrolling the area at random times.
"But it would be nice if we could have some CCTV cameras installed down here.
"It just adds to people's safety, and I personally don't see any harm."

Following the stabbing, police stepped up patrols in the area which continued yesterday with the aim of reassuring the public and 'reduce instances of anti-social behaviour and criminal activity', according to a post on the Southampton Cops Facebook page.
Speaking yesterday, Southampton Chief Inspector Christopher Douglas said: "We know that reports of this nature will understandably be concerning to the public, however, we would like to reassure you that this incident took place between people known to each other, and we do not believe there to be any wider risk to anybody else at the current time.
"A 36-hour warrant of further detention has been granted by magistrates this morning, giving us further time to question the man in custody and fully investigate the circumstances leading up to this incident.
"You will see an increased police presence in the area today as officers continue conducting enquiries, please do come and speak to them if you have any questions or concerns."
