Firefighters and paramedics rescued a woman who fell ill in a block of flats on Wednesday.
An eyewitness said he saw a woman 'curled up on the floor' on the fifth-floor landing of Wyndham Court in Empire Lane.
He said: "I wasn’t sure what had happened and checked and realised she was breathing.
"My first thought was to do first aid and call 999.
"I do hope she is okay."
The ambulance service requested the help of fire crews from St Mary's to help get the woman out the building and into the ambulance.
She was treated at the scene by medics from Hampshire and Isle of Wight Air Ambulance before being taken to hospital by land.
The incident was reported just after 11.30am.
A spokesman from South Central Ambulance Service said: "This was a medical emergency where our team required the assistance of the fire and rescue service to help get the patient into the ambulance as they were on the 5th floor of the apartment block."
A spokesperson from Hampshire and Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service added: "St Mary’s firefighters were called to assist ambulance colleagues with the removal of a casualty from a building on Commercial Road in Southampton at around midday.
"Hampshire & Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service left the scene shortly after 1pm with the casualty left in the care of South Central Ambulance Service paramedics."
Emergency services left the scene shortly after 1pm.
