RESIDENTS have spoken of their shock after seven men were arrested on suspicion of attempted murder following a stabbing in Shirley.

The victims, two men aged 30, were taken to hospital on Sunday night where they remain in a serious condition. They were found with stab wounds to their left sides.

Following the incident, police officers set up a cordon outside Amira Lounge on Shirley High Street, and another on nearby Dyer Road.

What happened?

Police said they received a report of a man who suffered stab wounds at 11pm on Sunday.

When they arrived in the Shirley Road area, they found a 30-year-old man with a serious injury to his left-hand side.

Following reports that a second man had been injured, another 30-year-old was found with a serious injuries to his left-hand side.

A police spokesperson confirmed both injuries were stab wounds.

Where were the victims found?

Hampshire police confirmed that one of the victims was found on Nightingale Road - adjacent to Dyer Road - while the other victim was found further away from the scene on Ted Bates Road, near St Mary's Stadium.

What do residents say?

Sunanda Kuma, 29, who lives in Dyer Road, was shocked the incident took place so close to home after she heard “loud noises” in the night.

She told the Echo: “It's shocking, you can't really imagine something like that happening so close to home.

“I heard loud voices (on Sunday) night but nothing more. Maybe somebody was attacked somewhere else and then made their way here for help? It's such a shame."

Daily Echo:

An elderly man who lives in Dyer Road, who wished to remain anonymous, told the Echo he was awoken by a “right racket” in the early hours of Monday morning – where he saw “a dozen people fighting in the street”.

He said: "I came down to the front room and had a look out of the window and there must have been about a dozen people fighting.

"It's not the same as it used to be, this was a family road when I first moved in but now all you hear about is violence, knife crime and drugs. It's off the scale."

Who are the people arrested?

Seven men, all from Southampton, were taken into custody having been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder.

They are:

  • A 23-year-old 
  • A 25-year-old 
  • A 33-year-old 
  • Two 34-year-olds
  • A 39-year-old 
  • A 44-year-old 

They remain in custody.
