The devastating fire that gutted a terraced house in Southampton forcing residents to be evacuated is no longer being treated as arson.

Police called to yesterday's blaze in Milton Road had arrested a 31-year-old man on suspicion of arson with intent to endanger life.

However, after investigating the scene alongside the fire service, officers released the suspect with no further action.

The cause of the blaze remains under investigation but it's no longer thought to have been started deliberately.

House fire in Milton Road - As it happened

Huge flames ripped through the building - a house of multiple occupation (HMO) - after the fire broke out just after 3pm.

Plumes of black smoke filled the air as the fire burned through every single room of the property.

Neighbours were evacuated as firefighters tackled the flames and made the scene safe.

The area remained cordoned off this morning to allow fire investigators and police to establish how the blaze started and assess the damage caused.
