A seriously-ill man who suffered a stroke in Thailand is due to fly back to the UK today following his family's month-long struggle to get him home.

Peter Burder, 74, from Fareham, lay unconscious for three days after collapsing in his Thailand apartment last month. He was taken to a hospital in a serious condition.

Confronted with a medical bill of £20,000, Peter's family set up a fundraiser to help raise money to bring him home.

After raising more than £6,500, the family said Peter would be flying back on Wednesday, August 16.

In a post on Go Fund Me, a spokesperson for the family said: "We have had the best news today that Peter will be flying home on the August 16 on a repatriation flight. Let’s keep the donations coming in so we can help pay towards the costs."

Peter's family first raised the alarm after Peter stopped responding to messages.

On admission to hospital, he was diagnosed with acute kidney failure, respiratory failure, sepsis, sepsis shock and pneumonia.

In just eight days, the medical bill reached £20,000, with a warning it could go as high as £50,000.

A medic aid air flight to get Peter back home could also cost the family an additional £20,000, prompting the family to set up a fundraiser.

Peter's daughter, Jolene Burder, has been in Thailand alongside her mum Lin and sister Cheryl to be with her dad while he was in hospital.
