Two months after the shocking discovery of a human placenta in a wooded cut-way in Southampton, police are yet to establish the full circumstances of the incident.
It’s a case that has baffled both the police and the public after a teenager and his friends spotted the organ on their way to school.
Despite several appeals from police and University Hospital Southampton's director of midwifery, the mum is yet to come forward. Her identity, and that of her baby, are still unknown.
As police continue to look into the case two months on, here’s a timeline of events that have led to this point.
June 21
Police discover what they believe to be human afterbirth off Dale Road in Shirley on the morning of Wednesday June 21, as Hampshire Constabulary identify two men on CCTV they’d like to speak to in connection with the incident.
In a statement, Southampton Chief Inspector Marcus Kennedy said: “We continue to investigate the circumstances leading up to the discovery of the placenta and now have images of these two men who we would like to speak to as soon as possible.
“Our priority remains locating the mother who has recently given birth to ensure that she gets any medical treatment that she and her baby need.
“I still urge her to make contact with a medical professional as soon as possible, whether that be a GP, by attending a hospital or walk-in centre, or by speaking to any other healthcare workers.”
June 24
Chief Inspector Marcus Kennedy tells the Echo tests are underway to confirm the placenta found in the city is indeed human as concerns grow for a mother and her newborn baby.
CI Kennedy, said: “We sent (the placenta) off for further DNA examinations to try to determine if it 100 per cent, categorically a human placenta, and we will know in the next 24 hours.”
That same day, Upper Shirley High student, Jamie Clarke, who made the discovery, is praised for raising the alarm.
Jamie told the Echo: “At first, I thought it was a bit of an animal but when we saw it, it didn’t look like an animal. It just didn’t look like it, it was too big, so we decided to call the police.”
July 11
Nearly three weeks after the placenta was found, police officers made their first arrest.
Police arrested a 30-year-old woman on suspicion of concealing the birth of a child.
The woman was later released with no action taken against her.
July 14
Police renew their appeal three weeks after the case began.
CI Kennedy said the police continue to keep an ‘open mind’ about the factors which may be stopping the mother from coming forward.
August 7
Police identify a potential witness after expanding the timeframe in which the mother could have given birth.
Officers believed a man was in the Dale Road and Holly Brook area on Saturday, July 1 at around midday - ten days after the discovery - and that he 'may have information to assist police'.
The man has since been identified and spoken to.
