Mr Jaines, 35, was pronounced dead at the scene. His six-year-old son, who was in a rear passenger seat, sustained minor injuries.

Area coroner Jason Pegg opened the inquest on Monday August 21 at Winchester Coroners' Court.

The inquest heard that the BMW struck the central reservation before leaving the road and colliding with a verge on the westbound carriageway.

The cause of death was given as head injury, due to a road traffic collision.

This comes after Simon's family paid tribute to him.

In the tribute, his family said: "We are all completely devastated and words cannot describe the pain we are all feeling right now.

"What was supposed to just be a fun boy's weekend away (daddy and son) to watch the footy has ended in a complete tragedy.

"We can only be grateful that his little boy walked away, and no one else was injured.

"Si was such a kind, funny, witty person (with some questionable dance moves) who was loved by so many people, and the outpouring of messages we're receiving has been comforting.

"He was an avid West Ham supporter and was a much-loved daddy, husband, son, brother, family member and friend, and will be missed dearly by all.

"We would like to sincerely thank the emergency services and witnesses for their help and best efforts on the day."

The M27 was closed for several hours due to the incident, which led to widespread gridlock in Southampton and as far afield as Romsey.

The full inquest will be held at Winchester Coroners' Court on Wednesday August 14 next year.
