A FATHER and son duo are nearing the end of their charity cycle from Bristol to Southampton after surpassing their fundraising target.
Saints fan Chris Collis, 34, and his seven-year-old son Charlie started their 80-mile journey on Wednesday morning and are due to arrive at St Mary’s stadium at around 1.30pm today.
The pair's fundraiser in aid of the Saints Foundation was inspired by former Saints defender Sam McQueen.
Growing up, Chris would attend Saints games with his late father, a season ticket holder.
For him, the challenge is more than just a cycle.
Speaking at the start of the journey, he said: “We are just enjoying it at the moment, we have been very lucky with the weather and are enjoying it as we cycle.
“While we were cycling this morning, Charlie was telling me I chose a bad route while we were going up a hill but then as we came down, he started to enjoy it.
“I’m looking forward to a beer on our first night stop.”
The first day saw the dad and son duo cycle 25 miles, followed by another 16 on Thursday and a gruelling 32 on Friday.
From Romsey to St Mary’s stadium, it's another nine miles.
Chris said: “The wife and daughter will be stopping every five miles. We usually pick a point to stop to take a break and we have a drink, and we’ll go another five miles.
“We’re trying to give Charlie little targets to do throughout the day, it was a really proud moment for us to see him taking the first cycle.”
Through the cycle, Chris and Charlie have raised just shy of £2,000 - well above their initial target of £1,500.
Thanking everyone who donated to the fundraiser, Chris said: “The money will make such a massive difference to the local community. Thank you so much to everyone who has given to the cause.
He added: “Charlie has been really excited, every time we have told him that one more person has donated, his eyes light up and wants to know who it is.”
