A Netley student is following the footsteps of our current Prime Minister by attending his former college after achieving some stellar GCSE results.

Martha Morrow has been offered a scholarship at Winchester College after getting eleven 9s in her GCSEs.

The highest grade a student can achieve is a 9, the equivalent of an A* and the pass grade is 4, the equivalent of a low C.

The 16-year-old who studied at The Hamble School said she couldn’t have done it "without the support of all the teachers".

She will be studying philosophy, music, maths and physics at the college where Mr Sunak was head boy - which charges sixth form students an annual fee of £36,369.

She said: “The teachers supported me through the whole thing as did my friends. It’s a massive achievement for me personally, I'm very proud.”

Martha hopes to do well enough to be able to study philosophy, politics and economics (PPE) at the University of Oxford - a course studied by Mr Sunak himself and former PMs like David Cameron and Liz Truss.

GCSE results from schools across Southampton

Other students at The Hamble School had reasons to celebrate.

Alicja Babiniec was ‘shocked’ to discover she achieved eight 9s and two 8s for her GCSEs.

She said: “My nerves were building up with all the talk about the grade boundaries being high. It’s been a lot of hard work but with these grades, I can say this is why I worked so hard.”

Headteacher Louisa Cambridge said the school is ‘delighted’ that students will successfully move onto the next stage of their education and wished them every success.

Over at Wyvern College in Fair Oak, the proportion of students gaining 5 or more good GCSE passes (grades 9 to 4), including English and Maths, has increased by five per cent to 70 per cent.

There was also an increase in the proportion of students gaining 5 or more strong passes (grades 9 to 5), including English and maths, while the proportion of students gaining good passes in both English and maths has gone up to 75 per cent.

Pupils at the school described their joy as they opened their envelopes.

Tyler Roberts-Pen got an 8 in maths, a 7 in history and a 6 in science.

The 16-year-old would like to become a music producer and said he is "very happy" with his grades and will be studying at Barton Peveril College in Eastleigh.

Another student, Jess Banks, got an 8 in photography and English literature and a 6 in English language.

She was pleasantly surprised as she did better than she expected and will now go on to study psychology and English at Barton Peveril College.

Head teacher Ben Rule at Wyvern said: “On behalf of all my staff, I would like to congratulate our students on their achievements.

“They have shown real dedication to their learning in the last five years and once again this year secured significantly higher levels of attendance and significantly lower levels of suspensions than national and county averages. They deserve their success.”
